Interpreting falls into three main categories.

1. Liaison or ad hoc Interpreting

The interpreter provides verbal communication with overseas visitors in situations such as factory visits, informal business meetings or one-to-one conversations in a number of different situations.

2. Consecutive Interpreting

Usually for larger groups, the interpreter sits alongside the speaker, interpreting what has been said once the speaker has paused or finished.

3. Simultaneous Interpreting

This is the most specialised form of interpreting where the interpreter, using headsets and booths, interprets the speaker's words as they are being spoken without pausing. With this type of work, interpreters usually work in pairs as the level of concentration means they can only work for 20 or 30 minutes at a time.
